Today we take a step back in time on a temple exploration trip to Borobudur and the Prambanan temple complex. Our first stop takes us to the world’s largest Buddhist monument complex, Borobudur. This UNESCO listed site dates back to the 9th century and the striking structure pierces through a patchwork of bottle-green paddies and swaying palms.
After the decline of Buddhism and shift of power to East Java, the monument was abandoned soon after its completion and for centuries lay forgotten, buried under layers of volcanic ash. We will climb to certain level to soak up stunning vistas of the Menoreh Mountains (subject to weather conditions) before strolling through the complex.
We then continue to a nearby smattering of temples, including Pawon and Mendut, before driving to Prambanan village to visit the Prambanan Temple Complex. Also known as the complex of Lorojongrang, this Hindu temple dates back to the 9th century when Java was ruled by the Hindu Sanjayas of Old Mataram in the north. It consists of three main ornately decorated temples. (Please kindly note the queue to be able to step up on certain level to Brorobudur Temple will be available on your arrival. There is a local restriction to obey before entering the temple).
