Join us on this tour through the impressive Somiedo Natural Park, a park declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2000. This park is also one of the first protected natural areas in Asturias, dating back to 1988, and one of the best preserved in the northern part of the peninsula. With its 29,164 hectares, Somiedo Natural Park offers a unique environment, perfectly representing the ethnographic culture of the Asturian mountains.
Our journey will begin by heading to the Alto de la Farrapona mountain pass. Along the way, we will immerse ourselves in the wild beauty of the rocky mountains and pass through an area with several viewing points for bear watching.
Once we reach Alto de la Farrapona, we will begin a walking route to visit Lake La Cueva, which will offer us spectacular views surrounded by mountains.
Next, we will move on to Veigas to visit the Somiedo Ecomuseum. Here, we will learn more about traditional trades, transhumance, and the famous thatched cottages, which are typical vegetation-roofed constructions found in the area’s homes.
We will also visit Pola de Somiedo, the capital of the municipality, located in the heart of the park. You’ll fall in love with this Asturian village, which has remained hidden among the mountains since the 13th century and is located by the Somiedo River. Here, we will wander through its cobbled streets and visit its 18th-century parish church of San Pedro before having free time for lunch and enjoying the local cuisine.
Finally, we will travel to the village of La Peral, which, at 1,200 meters above sea level, is actually an ancient braña vaqueira (a seasonal mountain settlement). As a braña, it was home to the vaqueiros and their animals during the spring, summer, and autumn seasons, with the inhabitants descending to lower-altitude villages to spend the winter. In La Peral, we will also visit the Mirador del Príncipe, where we will enjoy stunning views over the valley.
Come and immerse yourself in the pure nature of Somiedo Natural Park! A perfect tour for nature lovers, hikers, and wildlife enthusiasts.
