Take this small group tour to discover the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Bourbone royal family residence, one of the largest palaces in all Europe was built in 1752 by Luigi Vanvitelli, and later by his son Carlo, at the behest of Carlo di Borbone with the aim of erecting it as the fulcrum of the new kingdom of Naples. The Palace has 1,200 rooms and is a masterpiece of Baroque art.
The interiors are a tribute to luxury, to glitz, and elegance. The best artists of the kingdom were called for the realization of the work.
Upon entering, the view is captured by the staircase, a masterpiece of architecture and scenography with various statues and the large size of the dome became an inspiration for many other stairs designed later.
The Royal Plan in the Royal Palace of Caserta was divided into 4 districts by Luigi Vanvitelli. The southwest of the floor was the district for the King and is now called 19th-century apartments. The southeast part of the plan was for the Crown Prince, now known as 18th-century apartments, and was the only section inhabited by the royal family for more than 50 years. The other two living spaces are called Old and New Apartments.
Another creation by Luigi Vanvitelli, the Palatine Chapel was also inspired by the chapel of the Palace of Versailles. However, Vanvitelli gave the Chapel a distinctly Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque personal touch. The Palatine Chapel is located near the entrance of the Royal Apartments and was inaugurated in Christmas 1784.
The Palatine Library occupies 3 rooms of the Ancient Apartments of the Royal Palace of Caserta and is beautifully furnished in walnut and mahogany. There are about 14,000 books and pamphlets collected by the royal family, including some important and prestigious writings. You can also find books about significant works of European and Neapolitan culture of the modern era.
The Royal Palace of Caserta has a collection of paintings from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century. There are 9 rooms in total, each room is full of paintings sorted by specific subjects. Some of these collections include still lifes, portraits of the royal family, images of history, landscape paintings and many others.
Inspired by the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples, the Royal Court at the Royal Palace of Caserta was one of the first theatres to take the form of a horseshoe. The theatre was considered to be the best acoustic space in the country. The king used this theatre for private performances of Neapolitan theatre performances.
