Nowadays, it is still possible to admire the mosaics, the artifacts and the frescoes on the walls of the residential houses.

Although it was smaller than Pompeii, Herculaneum was a wealthier town close to the sea and a popular destination for the Roman elites.

Regular excavations began in 1738, after some diggings in the early 1.700s, and have continued ever since. Today, only a part of the ancient site has been excavated, and many other treasures have to be discovered.
