The Douro River is witness to the birth and evolution over time of the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. With our tour from Gaia to Ribeira you will be able to learn, with the help of an official guide in Spanish, the history and curiosities of local life in both towns while enjoying a pleasant walk along the banks of one of the most important rivers in the Iberian Peninsula.
We will begin our visit on the banks of Vila Nova de Gaia, specifically in front of its municipal market, the Beira-Rio Market, a traditional space where typical Portuguese cuisine plays a very important role. Right in front we will find what has become one of the main attractions of the city, the Gaia Cable Car, a structure that, in addition to facilitating travel to the upper part of the city, offers unique views of the entire area.
From this shore we will see how the Porto Cathedral dominates the city and we will take advantage of these views to be surprised by some legends that speak about its origin or about the riches and treasures it protects. Very close we will find the Cálem Winery, one of the most outstanding in Portugal, which becomes an ideal place to discover the historical importance of wine in this region and some of its most characteristic elements, such as the caves or the rabelos.
Our walk through Gaia continues to observe right in front of us the vestiges of the most medieval Porto through the Fernandine Walls, a large construction that bears witness to the defensive past of the city of Porto. But if you prefer to see the neighbouring city from above at another time, our guide will show you how to go up to the Jardim do Morro, one of the most famous parks and viewpoints in Vila Nova de Gaia.
As we cross the Dom Luis I Bridge, we will observe the details of one of the most incredible structures that crosses the Douro and learn about its relationship with Gustave Eiffel, as well as the historical events that have taken place there since its construction. Once on the banks of Porto, we will stop to get an incredible panoramic view of the Monastery of the Serra do Pilar, considered one of the monuments with the greatest historical value and most emblematic of the city of Gaia.
We will end our walk in the Ribeira district of Porto, also known as Miragaia, which during the Middle Ages was the port and commercial center of the city and still maintains much of its ancient essence, with narrow, steep streets and tall houses decorated with tiles.
