The area now known as Wichita, Kansas, was originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Wichita, Kichai, and Osage. French explorer Étienne de Veniard, Sieur de Bourgmont, explored the area in 1719 and was the first documented European presence in the area. In 1864, the U.S. Army established a trading post at the confluence of the Arkansas and Little Arkansas Rivers, which is now the modern day city of Wichita.
In 1868, a group of investors, headed by businessman Cyrus K. Holliday, founded the city of Wichita. The city quickly became an economic hub for the region and was soon home to a variety of industries, including flour mills, brickyards, and livestock. The city's economy was further diversified when oil was discovered nearby in 1915.
