Brief history of Tokyo?

Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city

Tokyo has a long and rich history, dating back to the 6th century when it was known as Edo. In 1603, Tokugawa Ieyasu made Edo his base of operations and it became the capital of the Tokugawa shogunate. Edo underwent tremendous growth and development over the next two centuries, becoming the largest city in the world by the 1800s. After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Edo was renamed Tokyo (meaning Eastern Capital) and became the de facto capital of Japan. Tokyo continued to experience rapid growth and modernization, and in 1923 it was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake. Despite the destruction, Tokyo was quickly rebuilt and emerged as one of the most important cities in the world. Today, Tokyo is a bustling metropolis and the home of more than 13 million people.
