Brief history of Surrey?

Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city

The area now known as Surrey has been inhabited for thousands of years by various indigenous peoples including the Sto:lo, the Semiahmoo, the Katzie, the Kwantlen and the Kwikwetlem. The first European explorer to visit the area was Spanish explorer Jacinto Caamaño, who arrived in 1791. In the early 1800s, the area was part of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s trading post at Fort Langley. The settlement of Surrey was founded in 1879 by the colonial government and was named after the county of Surrey in England. During the 1880s, a railway was built through Surrey and the area quickly developed into a major agricultural hub. In the early 20th century, the area saw an influx of settlers and the population began to grow rapidly. In the 1950s and 60s, Surrey became a major centre for manufacturing and light industry and in the 1970s, the city began to develop into a suburban area.
