The city of San Jose was founded in 1777 by Spanish colonists as Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe. It is the first civilian settlement in the Spanish province of Alta California, which would eventually become the state of California. After the Mexican-American War, San Jose was briefly controlled by the United States, becoming the capital of the California Territory in 1849. Following the admission of California to the Union in 1850, San Jose became the state's first capital. It remained the state capital until 1851, when the capital was moved to Sacramento.

San Jose quickly grew in size and importance, becoming a major transportation hub for the region. In 1868, it was incorporated as a city, and soon became the largest city in northern California. As the city grew, it attracted a diverse population, including immigrants from many different countries.
