Brief history of Sacramento?
Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city
Sacramento, the capital of California, was founded in 1848. The city was established as a result of the California Gold Rush, and was named for the Sacramento River, which runs through the city. Initially a small, isolated settlement, Sacramento quickly developed into a regional commercial center and transportation hub due to its location at the confluence of two major rivers. During the late 19th century, Sacramento was a major center for the railway and agricultural industries, as well as the banking and finance fields. The city experienced rapid growth during the 20th century, with the population increasing from just over 100,000 in 1900 to nearly 500,000 in the 1970s. In the 1980s, Sacramento began to focus on revitalizing its downtown area and increasing its economic development efforts. In 2000, Sacramento was the sixth-largest city in California and the 35th-largest in the United States.
