Brief history of Riverside?
Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city
Riverside, California was founded in 1870 by John W. North and is considered the birthplace of the California citrus industry. The city was incorporated in 1883 and was named for its proximity to the Santa Ana River. Following incorporation, the city experienced rapid growth and development due to its temperate climate and wealth of natural resources. Riverside soon became a center of commerce and industry, particularly in the citrus industry. The city flourished until the Great Depression, when the citrus industry was hit hard by low prices and drought. The city diversified its economy, and by the 1940s had become a major hub for service and manufacturing industries. In the 1950s and ‘60s Riverside was home to a booming aerospace industry, and the city has since become a center for medical research and healthcare. In recent years Riverside has seen a revitalization of its downtown area, with an influx of businesses, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
