The city was founded in 1878 by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, known as the "Mesa Company," and was officially incorporated in 1883. In the early 20th century, Mesa was an agricultural hub and the surrounding area became known as the “Valley of the Sun.” In the 1950s, Mesa began to transition from an agricultural town to a suburban city, and by the 1970s, it had grown to become the 38th largest city in the country. Today, Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona and is a vibrant and diverse community of nearly 500,000 people.
