Luang Prabang is the former royal capital of the Lan Xang kingdom, and is one of the oldest towns in Laos. It was founded in the 14th century and served as the capital of Lan Xang until 1545. During this period, the city was considered an important hub of Buddhism and was home to many monasteries and temples. In the 16th century, the kingdom of Lan Xang fell into decline and Luang Prabang was sacked by the Burmese. It was later annexed by Siam (modern Thailand) and remained part of the kingdom until the French took control in 1893. During the French colonial period, Luang Prabang became known as the "Pearl of the Orient" and was the administrative center of French Indochina. Following the end of French rule in 1954, it became part of the newly independent kingdom of Laos, and has since become a popular tourist destination due to its rich cultural heritage and stunning natural beauty.
