Long Beach was first established as a separate city in 1888, after it was annexed from Los Angeles County. It was originally called Willmore City, after William Willmore bought the land from ranchers and developed it. The city was renamed Long Beach in 1895, after the long beachfront that stretched from Alamitos Bay to Rancho Los Cerritos.
