Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, was first settled by the Phoenicians in the 12th century BC, and later by the Celts in the 5th century BC. In 205 BC, the Romans took possession of the city and ruled it for almost 600 years. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was taken over by the Visigoths, who were succeeded by the Moors after 714 AD. Lisbon was reconquered by the Portuguese forces in 1147, under the leadership of Afonso Henriques.
The city became an important trading hub and commercial center of the Portuguese Empire, and a major source of wealth. Lisbon was the seat of the Spanish viceroys in the 16th century, and in 1580 Philip II of Spain was proclaimed king of Portugal.
