The first settlements on Langkawi were established in the early 19th century by Malay seafarers and fishermen. During the 19th century, the islands were also a trading post between Chinese, Malay and Siamese merchants. In the late 19th century, Langkawi developed into a major port for the tin and rubber industries, and the population grew significantly.
