The area that is now Indianapolis was first inhabited by the Miami, Delaware, and Potawatomi Native American tribes. French fur traders established trading posts in the area in the late 1700s, and the first permanent non-native settlers arrived in the early 1800s. In 1820, the Indiana General Assembly selected the area to become the new state capital and named it Indianapolis. The city began to grow rapidly with the arrival of the National Road and the Indianapolis & Madison Railroad in the 1830s. In 1847, Indianapolis was officially incorporated as a city.

The city continued to expand in the late 1800s and early 1900s with the founding of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in 1902, the construction of Union Station in 1853, and the opening of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909.
