Honolulu was first settled by Polynesian settlers in the 13th century. In 1795, the first foreign settlers, a group of missionaries led by American Protestant Congregationalist Hiram Bingham, arrived in Honolulu. The missionaries built the first Western-style buildings in the area and established the first Christian church.

In 1845, Kamehameha III declared Honolulu the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. In 1898, the United States annexed Hawaii and made Honolulu the Territorial capital. After Hawaii became a US state in 1959, Honolulu remained the state capital. Today, it is the largest city in the state and a major hub for tourism and business in the Pacific.
