Brief history of Hong Kong?

Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city

Hong Kong has a long and rich history that dates back thousands of years. The first known settlers of Hong Kong were the Tanka people, who lived there as fishermen and traders during the Han Dynasty. During the Song Dynasty, the region was incorporated into the Chinese empire. In the early 1800s, Hong Kong became a major trading port, leading to the establishment of the British colony in 1841. Under the terms of the Treaty of Nanking, the British were given control of the Hong Kong island and the Kowloon peninsula. In 1898, the British acquired a 99-year lease for the New Territories, greatly expanding their presence in the region. During World War II, Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese from 1941-1945. After the War, the British regained control of Hong Kong and continued to administer the region until 1997, when the sovereignty was transferred to the People's Republic of China. Since then, Hong Kong has been an autonomous region with its own government and laws.
