The city of Guilin has a recorded history of more than 2,000 years. The earliest known record of the area dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221-207BC). During this period, a settlement called Shixian was established in the area. The settlement developed into a county during the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD). During the Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), the city became an important trading center and was later declared the capital of the Guangxi Province in 1117. It was an important city during the Ming and Qing dynasties and served as the provincial capital until 1914. The city was the birthplace of the renowned Chinese artist and scholar, Li Bai, who lived during the Tang Dynasty. In recent years, the city has become a popular tourist destination due to its stunning scenery and unique landscape.
