Fresno was founded in 1872 by a group of settlers from the San Joaquin Valley. The original settlement was called "Fresno Station," and the name was derived from the Spanish word for ash tree. In 1885, the city was incorporated, and the population had grown to 1,500. The Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1872, and Fresno was connected to the rest of the state by rail. In the early part of the 20th century Fresno developed into an agricultural center and was known as the "Raisin Capital of the World." The city experienced rapid growth during the 1950s and 1960s and is now the fifth largest city in California.
