In 1884, Cairns was declared a municipality, making it the first town in Far North Queensland to be officially declared a city. In the years that followed, Cairns experienced rapid growth and development, becoming the primary port for North Queensland and the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. In the late 1990's, Cairns became a popular tourist destination, and today it is one of the most visited cities in Australia.
