Brief history of Bakersfield?
Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city
Bakersfield, California was officially incorporated in 1873, but the area has a much longer history of human habitation. The Yokuts people were the original inhabitants of the area. In 1776, Spanish settlers established the Mission San Fernando Rey de España, which was the first permanent European settlement in the area. Following the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 ceded the area to the United States. After California was granted statehood in 1850, the area was opened to American settlers who established farms and ranches in the fertile San Joaquin Valley. In 1869, Colonel Thomas Baker purchased land near the Kern River, which was the beginning of the modern city of Bakersfield. The city grew rapidly as oil was discovered in the area in 1899, leading to an economic boom. Bakersfield has since become an important center for agriculture, oil, and gas production, as well as a major hub for transportation.
