Brief history of Athens?
Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city
Athens has a long and storied history that dates back to the Neolithic period. The city is believed to have been founded by the legendary King Cecrops in the late Bronze Age (around 1250 BC). In the 8th century BC, Athens became the most important city-state in Greece and was the center of the Delian League, a powerful maritime alliance. Athens was also the birthplace of democracy, and in 508 BC the city established the world's first democratic government. The Peloponnesian War (431-404 BC) saw Athens and its rival Sparta battle for control of the Greek world. Athens and its allies were ultimately defeated and the city was sacked. For the next two centuries Athens went into a period of decline, until it was conquered by the Roman Empire in the 2nd century BC. Under Roman rule, Athens continued to be an important cultural center, and in the 4th century AD it became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire.
