This tour will take us to an important pre-Columbian archaeological site near Teuchitlan in the valley of Tequila.
The site was only discovered in the 1970s – before this it was believed that Western Mexico did not have any significant ceremonial sites or cities. Here you can explore circular pyramids known as Huachimontones, as well as remains of mining operations, fields and ballcourts dating back to as early as 300BC.
The tour begins with a brief video about the pyramids and a visit to a small museum containing artefacts found in the area. Then we'll drive to the pyramids themselves. These massive circular structures are believed to have been built by a creative culture, part of the so-called Teuchitlan tradition, a complex society that existed from as early as 300 BCE until perhaps 900 CE.
There are several pyramids to explore, some of which have a a post hole at the summit, most likely for volador ceremonies. The pyramids may also have supported small temples. Sunken circular plazas surround each pyramid and a series of smaller mounds surround the plazas. On top of the mounds are platforms that once supported wooden buildings made of wood and clay. The site has a total of 10 circular complexes, four rectangular plazas and two ballcourts.
