city guide
Kansas City (abbreviated KC or KCMO) is the largest city in Missouri by population and area. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 508,090 in 2020, making it the 36th most-populous city in the United States. It is the most populated municipality and historic core city of the Kansas City metropolitan area, which straddles the KansasMissouri state line and has a population of 2,392,035. Most of the city lies within Jackson County, with portions spilling into Clay, Cass, and Platte counties. Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a port on the Missouri River at its confluence with the Kansas River coming in from the west. On June 1, 1850, the town of Kansas was incorporated; shortly after came the establishment of the Kansas Territory. Confusion between the two ensued, and the name Kansas City was assigned to distinguish them soon after.

Fun city facts and activities
- Kansas City gets lumped into flyover country too often, and that's a mistake. The best things to do in Kansas City include an up-and-coming arts scene, a variety of restaurants serving both the signature cuisine (BBQ) and modern takes on classics and a ton of fountains. (Yes, you read that right. There are a lot of cool fountains in this city.)
And aside from being a great sports town (if you think people are still celebrating the Super Bowl, you'd be right), Kansas City also boasts a long jazz heritage and a slew of year-round events. Plus, in 2020, KC began offering free public transportation, making it super easy to get around, and which means you can conquer some of the city's highlights all in one (very affordable) weekend.

- If you're hoping to maintain a strict diet, or even some semblance of self-control, then visiting the best restaurants in Kansas City probably isn't for you. Locals don't do things like "portions" and they don't count calories. In fact, eating pretty much tops the list of the best things to do in Kansas City. Gluttons, this city is for you.
KC is also a city that likes to throw down a challenge, and we find friendship in those who are willing to at least give it the old college try. There's BBQ (and the correspondeing BBQ events), of course, but you'd be surprised by what else makes it to the table. If you're planning on swingin' through, here are the spots we think show off the best of our diverse plate.
