Yogyakarta’s rich heritage and culture is uncovered on this half-day city discovery tour. We start at the Kraton Sultan’s Palace which was built in 1970 by Sri Sultan Hamengkubowono I. The palace is modelled on a traditional Javanese palace and still serves as the Sultan’s Palace today.
More than 25,000 people live within the greater Kraton compound of Taman Sari which houses a market, shops, cottage industries, schools and mosques. We then take a walking tour to the Water Castle and Kota Gede, the hub of Yogyakarta’s silver industry since the 1930s.
This old town was the first capital of the Mataram Kingdom, founded in 1582. Here, we visit a busy silver workshop to learn about the ancient techniques used to create a variety of silverware. We then return to the hotel, bringing the tour to an end.
Please note: The Sultan’s Palace opens every day from 8.30 am to 13.30 pm, but closes on Friday at 11 am and it is closed all day on Mondays, National and Kraton Holidays.
