Carnival in Milan is celebrated later than in the rest of Italy: this delay is said to derive from a request made to the population by its patron saint, Ambrose, who could not make it back in time from a pilgrimage far from Milan. Colourful costumes hit the streets and bakeries fill with delicacies such as tortelli and chiacchiere.
