The city of Seoul has a long and storied history, stretching back over two thousand years. The area was first settled by the Baekje Kingdom in 18 BCE and would become an important settlement for the kingdom. In the 14th century, Seoul became the capital of the Joseon Dynasty, and it remained the capital until the fall of the dynasty in 1910. During the Joseon Dynasty, Seoul developed into a bustling city and many of its historic buildings were constructed. Seoul was occupied by Japan from 1910 to 1945, and during this time it underwent a period of rapid modernization. After World War II, Seoul was the site of fierce battles between North and South Korea during the Korean War. In 1961, the city was designated the capital of South Korea, and it has since become an important economic, cultural, and educational hub in East Asia.
