Brief history of Mississauga?

Exploring the Past: A Concise History of the city

The history of Mississauga dates back to the 1600s when the land was first inhabited by the Algonquins and Iroquois Peoples. The first European settlers arrived in the early 1800s, and in 1805, the area became part of the Toronto Township. The name “Mississauga” was derived from the Ojibwe word “misi-zaagiing” which means “river of the black or alder trees”. The town of Mississauga was created in 1968, when the towns of Toronto Township and the Village of Cooksville were amalgamated. In 1974, the City of Mississauga was incorporated and has since grown to become the 6th largest city in Canada.
